Your time in Hoenn is spent exploring, catching, and battling. You hunt for Pokémon across different biomes, each hosting unique species. Catching new creatures fills your Pokédex and expands your options for building a strong team. Rivals and gym leaders block your path, so you must train your party and use type advantages to win. Fire beats Grass, Water beats Fire, Grass beats Water—and many more combinations apply. Learning these matchups and planning your moves turns each fight into a short puzzle.

After the main story, the Battle Frontier opens. This is a large post-game zone with multiple facilities and special battle formats. Here the difficulty ramps up: opponents use smarter tactics and stronger teams. Beating the Frontier tests everything you have learned and gives you a long-term goal beyond the credits.

Team Magma and Team Aqua drive the plot. Magma seeks to expand the land by awakening Groudon; Aqua wants to expand the ocean by awakening Kyogre. Their schemes throw the region into chaos. Your character gets caught in the middle and must help stop both groups. The only force that can restore order is Rayquaza, the legendary Pokémon that calms the two titans. Finding and awakening Rayquaza is a highlight of the story and ties your badge quest to the fate of Hoenn.
